Research and Innovation

Israac is partnered with both Sheffield universities for several action-research projects enabling culturally sensitive interventions promoting public health in marginalised communities. Led by Adam Yusuf, our chair and supported by Community Development Manager, Marie Croker and our Treasurer, Professor Emeritus Geoff Green, our Research and Innovation hub sits in the heart of our community centre.

Three projects organised by the University of Sheffield focus on mental capacity – CognoSpeak, utilising AI to detect early signs of dementia, Brain Health + Dementia and PPI Neuromod Collaboration Research – advancing acceptance and Inclusivity of non-invasive neurotechnology within African ethnic minority communities. Public health is promoted via two projects on Health Literacy and CLARITY. And a collaborative partnership with UOS School of Geography and planning investigates Transcontinental Urban Citizenship: interviewing returnee participants in the Somali Peninsula. We support Sheffield Hallam University developing power-assisted exercise in the STROKE PPI project.

Israac staff and trustees are active in research and innovation. Our Community Researchers Sahra Abdi and Muse Jama have a critical role in facilitating the contribution of lived experience in our communities. Adam Yusuf, also a business entrepreneur, heads Active Legs a Sheffield-based company that specializes in developing innovative exercise devices to improve leg and foot health. Developed in partnership with the University of Sheffield’s iForge Makerspace and Hallam University’s Advanced WellbeingResearch Centre, the Footrocka” device, is a portable foot rocker designed to stretch and strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons while increasing blood circulation.
